This project was inspired by an article on container technologies by Zoe Sofia. In this article, she discusses the role that containers play. She says that "the container is a structurally necessary but frequently unacknowledgeable precondition of becoming." She later goes into the difference between tools and machines, saying that "the tool lends itself to manipulation, the machine to automatic action." She says that most everything is actually a hybrid of container and tool/machine and that it is impossible to distinguish between the two. For this project, I took that as a challenge and did my best to make that distinction. Using a NYC subway car as a controlled setting, I observed 43 different containers of varying natures, and in this site, I filtered them by the category (or, often, categories) that they fit into.
